Hi, my name is Chloe, I live in Oakley, CA and I have about 6 years of experience as a caregiver.
What got you into caregiving?
Because I had to care for a couple of family members who were dying. After that, I continued to become a caregiver through homecare agencies and other venues because I have a passion for caregiving - especially for the elderly.
I feel that the elderly are wise and we can learn a lot from them as well as learn a lot of patience and respect. I just think it's a good thing to do. There needs to be more caregivers with big hearts, a lot of patience and a lot of knowledge.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
Be very alert and aware. Watch what is going on with your client at all times. Have a lot of patience and understanding. Be humble, be very caring and kind. Try as much as you can to communicate with your client. No matter what, no matter what type of disease they are fighting - if they have Alzheimer's or dementia try to be creative and try different ways of communication so that your client will trust you and you will have a better experience as a caregiver.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
I will never forget a very special woman who I worked with, who actually was a survivor of WWII and she was about 98 years old. Just her love of life and her spirit and how positive she was really motivated me as a younger adult. Seeing how she struggled with fighting some disease and a little bit of Alzheimer's, it was just amazing to see her want to wake up and face every day with a lot of strength and a lot of laughter and smiles. I will never forget that woman as she truly inspired me as an individual to stay positive and keep going no matter what.
