Hi, my name is Christel, and I live in Yucaipa, CA. I have 10 years of experience being a caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my mom. She was always so lovely and kind to all her kids and she had worked being a special aide with special needs students while I was growing up, so that inspired me to start working with special needs students and adults. I have started working for a school district and I worked there for 10 years.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to in general just be patient with the individual to learn that person. There are different things that people can do and can't do, and some people are really headstrong on what they like to do by themselves, so I would just give advice to someone who's new on the job.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Valery. I worked with Valery since she was in fifth grade up until she was about 22 years old. She was an adult. She's my longest term. I've worked with her for the school district and she had this tremendous things in her life. She ended up going onto college by herself. Tremendous strides she made and I know that I helped her along the way and it just makes me happy to see all the accomplishments that we have both done together in order to help her with her independence and her future.
