Hello, my name is Christian. I live in Sacramento, CA and I have been a caregiver for 12 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because a family member became ill and I realized then it is my duty in life to care for others.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be patient, understanding and flexible.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is Dejean. Dejean was 21 when I stopped working for him due to lack of hours. He became a quadriplegic at 18 years old, very young, very fresh in life, not a lot of life experiences but he did share with me, from time to time, things that he did before he became paralyzed. When I came in, he was so sad and depressed and very bitter about his situation. He didn't understand why him, but I came in and we made a dream board of things that maybe he could still do, things that he felt like he didn't get a chance to do that he might like to do and we found ways to work around that so that he could do those same things even in his condition. I also came in with positive quotes and inspirational books for him. I would read them and we would talk about different life experiences that I've had that maybe he could maybe one day experience with somebody or with himself. We also loved to eat together, we watched movies together and we became very close and because of that I will never forget Dejean.
