Hi my name is Christina, I live in Monrovia, CA and I've been a caregiver for 11 years.

How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I was actually helping out a couple that had hired me through an agency and I became very close with them. He was a double amputee and his wife did most of his caregiving. She needed assistance, they were both elderly, so I continued on with them for about a year, a year and a half and even into a home at this time, I continued to help her drive around and so on and so forth. Then as he passed, she and I just remained friends and I still took her shopping and she told me that I was a natural and that I should go to school and get my degree and I did. I really enjoy it. I love it.

What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to remember that every client and every person is different, every situation is different. Always remember we're all human beings and we're all different and try to be empathetic to each situation that anybody's in.

Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I would never forget would be when I was working for a certain client who stayed in Woodland Hills and when I got there, she was literally starving herself. She wouldn't eat, she was on hospice and I asked her what she liked to eat. She was literally eating maybe two bites of applesauce a day, maybe drinking four ounces of water if that. By the time I left to go to a different client, she had dementia and she was starting to hallucinate, so it just was not working out and so I went to a different client and I will never forget her because by the time I left, she was literally able to eat pork chops off the bone, and gave her some bagels and she was enjoying eating, so she would eat and smile. I'd have the hairdresser come out to the house. I'd call him and have him come out to do her hair. So she would let us wash her hair without being upset. So she enjoyed that and so I enjoyed it. I have very many stories that are memorable to me that she's definitely one of them and most of my clients have been repeat clients. I've have enjoyed most of them and I think that they've pretty much enjoyed me as well.
