Hi, my name is Consuelo. I now live in San Francisco, CA and I have been a caregiver for eight years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I really wanted to be a nurse. That was my dream when I was young, to be a registered nurse. I am a very caring person and I like to take care of people. I took care of my grandma back in the Philippines when she was very sick. And also, some of my other relatives. And finally, my mom, when she was sick, I took care of her too. So I really like to have that hands-on caring for older people.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be as caring and compassionate as they can, to love their patients as their own, but not to be attached and to be helpful and a team player with other employees.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is, Sylvia. She was a very funny, happy and easy going person. She's a client who is very loving and she takes me as her own. Every time I would dress her up or comb her hair, or walk with her, I wish in my heart, she was my mom. She's very loving and thoughtful to me. I think of my mom because that's how my mom was. I will never, never forget her because she's a very, very kind person.
