Hi! My name is Courtnee. I live in Long Beach, CA and I've been a caregiver for three years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my grandma got sick. I took care of her for three years. She had cancer. And it inspired me because I have a passion for older people and I see that there's so much wisdom in them. You can learn so much from them.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to be patient and to be kind because that's all it takes. To not rush them because they go at their own pace, and that's all that counts, is that you're listening to them, that they know that you're there for them and to make them feel loved and actually that they're cared about.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget her name is Berth. And when I first started, she was very mean, so I thought. And then, I worked for a couple months and we started getting along better. And she just understood, and I can have deep conversations with her and she ended up opening up to me, and I saw that she really wasn't mean, and that she was very sweet and kind, and that she had gone through a lot. And I understood what she has been through. All I wanted to do was listen to her and make her know that I was there.
