Hi my name is Cristal. I live in Oceanside,CA. I've been a caregiver for three years, one in a senior living facility.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my grandmother had Alzheimer's and my parents both worked, and I only went to school so I was the only one able to stay with her majority of the day to take care of her needs. Then when she passed away, I continued to caregive for her friends that I met during the time I was caring for her and now, I work at a senior living facility.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, be patient. Take your time with the elderly people because they need a lot of help and a lot of attention and rushing only makes the job worse because a lot of times, they don't remember or they don't understand why you're rushing them. Just take your time and help them as good as possible while you're with them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Marian because she had dementia and she was the sweetest lady and she would always call my name and then, by the time I get to her, she never knew what she wanted and I would just go down the list of things that I think she would need and she always told me, "You always can read my mind. Everything I need, you're always prepared." She always had a smile even on her worst days.
