Hi, my name is Cathy. I've been a caregiver for four years off and on. I live in San Jose.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I have compassion with older people and younger people. I started off with taking care of my grandma and my mom through hospice. I volunteered back in '99, and I'm taking care of a lady now with dementia. I was working for one year at Senior Helpers. I had to stop working there due to a family emergency, but I have a compassion for it.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a caregiver would be to have patience, to make sure that they do all the things that are required for the care of whomever they're taking care of; such as bathing them, changing them and everything that goes along with taking care of that.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is Patricia, and she's a sweet lady. She's had her days because she has dementia, and so I was with her for about a year. She slept a lot but when when she was awake she loved watching football, baseball and other sports. She wasn't too much of a talker, but she liked me and I liked her. She wasn't used to me when I first met her, but we got to know each other. It's really nice to have known her. It's kind of sad but it's nice. A lot of wisdom. They talk about everything from the past.
