Hi, my name is Cynthia and I've been a caregiver for about two years, and a year as a CNA. And I live in the city of Downey, CA.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because when you care for someone, it comes with the reward of caring for someone who needs you and depends on you. And I just think that caregiving comes from the heart. And to care for someone less fortunate becomes rewarding, because the feeling of assistant to someone, it makes you feel special and feel wanted, needed, loved and cared.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to practice your patience because there's not every client, patient, or resident is going to be an easy-easy thing to do or to work with. I think that the main key is just to have a lot of patience, and be kind, and just don't give up on that person, once you give up on that person, I think they lose a sense of selflessness.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is when I was working with another home care agency, and they told me that this client had Alzheimer's and heart disease. So, I didn't know at the time what dementia and Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease were. I just thought, okay maybe it's something in their blood or something in their system.
