Hi my name is Dania. I live in Sacramento, CA and I've been a caregiver for eight years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver taking care of my mother. It's a profession that I really do enjoy. Unfortunately, I did lose my mother to cancer, but then I continued taking care of other people, wonderful ladies, and I do enjoy this profession a lot. It just makes me feel wonderful to be able to help.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to have lots of patience, be ready to listen, and pay attention to the needs of your client.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget would be Miss Lona. She was a very down to earth person, very funny, very energetic. I remember one time we were going to go grocery shopping and the bus was waiting for us downstairs. We were running a little late and at the complex where she lived, they had an elevator and stairs, and we always took the elevator. Well, that day she just ran to the stairs and said, "Come on, slowpoke. I'll beat you down." and she sure did and then she was just really funny, very down to earth, and I'll never forget it.
