Hello, my name is Danielle. I live in Oak View, CA and I've been a caregiver for seven years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my parents, since childhood have owned an Alzheimer's and dementia facility. So, I spent most of my childhood days there, and when I became old enough to work, caring for the elderly just became natural. So, that is why I'm a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to care from the heart and to treat your resident or patient like you would treat your mother, grandmother, or any other family member.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is Dorothy. She had a mild case of dementia, but she mostly had anxiety. She had trouble just getting up to walk to the bathroom. She had trouble socializing with other residents. But as her caregiver, I would always encourage her to be sociable and to eat dinner with the other residents, and to go outside for a walk. And she would give me such a hard time, but the more I would motivate her, I could see her feeling more up to doing day-to-day activities. So I will never forget her, for her sense of humor, and the hard time she gave me.
