Hi my name is Danyall. I live in Salinas,CA. I've been a caregiver more or less for a year.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver due to my two grandmothers and my brother-in-law needing care, in home care and I wanted to go ahead and have someone that was familiar to them, that they would feel more comfortable with taking them to the doctors, speaking out for them, housekeeping, changing their clothes and everyday activities so that's why I became a caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
So what I would suggest that you have to be a compassionate person, that is honestly there to make a difference and help whoever is in need and be warm, caring and understanding what they need, seeing as they're in a more vulnerable state than they sometimes want to be and because they're independant so just be compassionate on that and let them know that you're just there to help them do whatever they already need you to do.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
My most memorable experience caregiving is just being there with the person you're doing the caregiving for, for example it was my grandmother, always liked me to do her hair, brushing her hair out, washing her hair, just making her feel like she is still a woman and making her feel beautiful and doing that extra little bit, painting nails, that kind of personalizing stuff to make sure that she still feels beautiful and what she can do, her capabilities, she can do herself and she needed just a little bit of help and I was there to offer help and she was there to let me know what she liked, how she liked to do her hair for example and what colour she liked her nails painted.
