Hi, I'm Danyell. I live in Austin, TX and I've been a caregiver for about seven years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my mom, she was a nurse at the time, she wanted me to start working and I already had volunteered at the nursing home where she was working for like two summers. I really enjoyed being around the residents, so I became a CNA and I've endured it ever since.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to pay attention to the little things, the little details, that the patient or elderly person tells you. Because usually, if you can do it without the telling you, they appreciate it. Kind of like a memory game. It makes things run smoother when you can remember their little kinks and how they like things done.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client I'll ever forget is Betty. She had early signs of dementia and I would go in there every day and make her coffee just the way she liked it. She's always giving me this big old smile and she always warmed my heart so much because her family would come in and she wouldn't always know who they were but she knew who I was every day and every time I would see her sitting in the living room or anything I would wave at her and she would just wave and smile. She was my favorite little lady.
