Hi, my name is Dava. I live in the city of Cypress, TX and I have been a caregiver for five years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver simply because I always wanted to do something to help people, and I feel that this job definitely gives me the opportunity to help someone in need. Whatever is needed to be done, I am there for them, and it makes me very happy to know that I can care for somebody in need.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, you should always have patience and compassion, and simply treat them the way you want to be treated, because this job is very emotional, and it takes a lot out of you. But seeing the smiles on their face when you help them, it makes it all worthwhile. Definitely be patient, be compassionate, and treat people the way you want to be treated. That is my advice for anybody.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget, and always remember, will have to be Clarice. She was one of my first patients. She was a former comedian and her jokes would have me laughing my heart out. I mean I would, literally, almost be dying of laughing from all her jokes. She would have tears run down my cheeks. I remember going home, after a long day's work, remembering the jokes she used to tell me, it was hilarious. And when she died, years later, that was the most emotional because I didn't think I would get that emotionally attached to a patient. They tell you not to because once they leave, it really breaks your heart. She would definitely have to be the most memorable patient I ever had, and I loved her, dearly, like she was my own grandmother.
