Hello, my name is De Shina Logan and I live in Oakley, California and I've been a caregiver for the past eight years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my family has always had love for other families and taking care of families and things of that nature. And when I moved to California, I decided that this is something that I want to do just to give back and you learn from your elders, so I went about doing so.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be - interact with the resident as much as possible, because some residents don't have family. So that one-on-one time. Play games with them. Show them pictures of their album, to see if they can remember that time. If they like walking places, take a little stroll with them. It's just more about interacting and just having that time and that moment with your resident. Keep them comfortable. If they like watching old movies, listening to songs, playing games. Just a lot of interaction with the resident.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I'll never forget is Lydia. Lydia was the happiest woman ever. When I'm off, she knows when I'm off. When I come back, she knows when I'm in her presence. I just totally love this woman. I was with her for five years until she passed. She was just a really nice woman and I do miss her dearly.
