Hi, my name is Debra. I live in Colorado Springs and I have two years experience as a caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because as a young girl I cared for my grandmother - I helped my mother - and it's one of my earliest memories. And one of my fondest memories is helping my mother to assist in caring for my grandmother, and it's something that I've always done and that I really enjoy it. And so when I had this opportunity to work as a caregiver, I just felt real comfortable in doing that and loving the job. So that's why I did it.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to always be patient and kind and understanding and to just remember that that could be your mother or your grandmother and just to always treat your clients with love and care.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget, her name was Maggie and she really liked her peas prepared in a special way with the garlic placed on them and - cut up and placed in the peas - and I prepared them one day for her, and I did not prepare them as she wanted. And when I served them she just scolded me in such a precious way I will never forget how sweet it was. And that's one of my fondest memories.
