Hi, my name is Debra, and I have been doing home care in Fresno for 30 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I have compassion and caring for all people, animals, and anything. I also had a mother who was a registered nurse, so caregiving seemed to be in our blood.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice would be to always keep the patients' wants and needs defined and to cater to them. They are the person you are caring for and are paying you, and give them love and compassion and caring conversation so that you can know them better and know what their wants are.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Pete. Pete eventually came to live in my own home for five years. He lived to be 95 years old. He loved to paint, and I was always running to Walmart to get him canvas and painting supplies. He was the kindest, most gentle, caring human being I have ever met, and it was very easy to give him all of that back and then some. This man was second to none as a gentleman
