Hi, my name is Deborah. I live in Suisun City, CA and I've been a caregiver for 4 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my niece and grandmother passed away, and I took care of my niece, grandmother. She wouldn't move and was disabled, she couldn't walk. I had to bathe her, run errands, and help give her her daily meds.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be as soon as you get into work, make sure you check on the patient, make sure the patient has everything done before you start in the other details. Make sure the patient has ate already, make sure the patient took their medicine, and make sure everything is okay with the patient before you start doing anything else.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is my grandmother. As soon as I'd come in to see her, I call her so she has nothing to fear. I talked to her and see what she needs, made her sit down at the couch. I've taken care of everything and she just talk for long time, just have a long conversation. If she talks to me and laughs at me, then she says she going to make me an heir because I can hold a long conversation with her and I make her feel good. And any time she need anything, she just call me and I could talk to her on the phone, and she just would say, "I just need to talk to somebody" so I would sit on the phone and I would talk to her. And so I tells her "okay, any time you need to call me, I don't care what time it is, pick up the phone and call me, and we can talk about anything you need to talk about.
