Hi I'm Debra. I live in Los Angeles,CA. I have been a caregiver for 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver as a result of moving to another state, I needed a career change and I went into caregiving. During the process at that time I cared for poor individuals and through that, with the skills I learned, I was able to take care of my father when he became sick.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is to be attentive to your client and whatever the person is asking you to do, in line with their needs because if you do what they're asking you to do, then you've done your job.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Michelle. My assignment for Michelle was to get my client back into community and so I found out what Michelle liked doing the most and what she liked doing the most was going to the casino. No one in the house, the other caregivers, that is, none of them wanted to take her. So I started going out with Michelle to the casino and after that, she wanted to do other things like feeding the ducks and she got back into community.
