Hi, my name is Delores. I live in the City of Long Beach, CA and I have been a caregiver for eight years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my grandma was sick with dementia. And I cared for her part-time while going to school.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be patient, be willing and open, because you need to learn the client that you're dealing with, so be patient.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is one client when I worked in the nursing home. She would always scream out, "Mama, Mama." And every time I would go in there, she would ask me if I was her mama. And I would tell her no, but she would tell me, "Well, you look like my mother." So, I didn't change this, the story, but when I would get her ready and get her dressed, I would listen to her stories about her mother, the stories that she remembered about her mother. And I would just be a listening ear to her. And at the end of her story, she would be all dressed and she would tell me, "Thank you, Mom." And I would give her a hug and she would tell me, "Oh, you hug just like my mother."
