Hello! My name is Dericka Booker. I live in Dallas, Texas, and I have about two years of experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I simply love to care for others. I have a passion for it. I believe that the greatest accomplishment in life is things that you can give back to other people. Ever since I was a little girl, I've always had a passion for helping others, especially children and elderly. Many job opportunities in leadership roles have allowed me to obtain knowledge and skills and mentor both children and adults of all races, ages, and needs. With my personal experience, is to make sure that every individual, I will provide the excellent care they need.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to make sure that you're passionate about what you're doing. Understand that it takes a lot of patience and a lot of growth. And never forget the purpose of why you're there. You're there to be kind of like a guardian angel, and a helper to someone in need. Think of it this way, if you were in a situation where you needed someone to help you, how would you want to be treated? And if you keep that mindset then I believe that you would be a great caregiver.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget, it was a little boy that I was a caregiver for, by the named Aiden. He was a four-year-old boy who had down's syndrome, and he had a younger brother that was two years old who was completely healthy. Well, without any illness or disabilities. And I remember how much joy he gave me and how full of energy he was. I actually was able to kind of grow as a caregiver just by providing care for him, because he was so active, there were some things that I had to learn by caring for him. And I believe that he helped me develop skills that I will be able to use for anyone, regardless of age, creed, or gender.
