Hi my name is Desaray. I live in Fort Worth, TX and I've been a caregiver for four years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I took care of my great grandmother for four years of high school. I really love elderly patients. I love the one-on-one connection with my residents, especially working with dementia and Alzheimer's patients, you get a real connection feel of how they are, what they like, and what they have been through.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver, don't wait with caregiver, the express rate. If it looks like the illness or injury is going to be messy, don't try to do everything by yourself. Caregivers will burn you out real quick, and first off, the main thing is to take care of yourself first before you could take care of another individual.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The most memorable client I would never forget, he had Parkinson's disease and he was very agitated all the time. He got up, can't get up, wouldn't sit down, and he had a broken hip. So we used to walk with him, try to calm him down, tire him out. So nothing would work with him. But he grew on me and I grew on him. Since I'm spending time with him, getting to know him, get to know what he liked and didn't like. Eventually, he calmed down with me personally because I knew him, what he didn't like and what he did like, So I had that one-on-one connection with getting to know him and getting to calm him down and that was my most memorable patient.
