Hi my name is Desiree. I live in Alhambra, CA. I've been a caregiver for eight years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I love to help people. I love to sit and hear the stories that they have to tell and caring for someone who needs it. Who lost a little bit of their independence, it's sad, but I'm glad to be there to be able to help them in any way possible.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, always have a smile on your face. No matter what's going on in your personal life, when you get there, sometimes you're the only person they'll see that day and your attitude really is respect them. That smile can go very far. Another advice I'd give would be, know their routines. So if they like to go for a walks in the afternoon or don't like certain food or like their bed made a certain way. Make those notes so you'd know what times they like to do things and stuff like that. Everything just a smooth ride during your shift there.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client I will never forget is Thomas. He was a hard client for some people but he was nothing but a sweetheart to me. I knew his routine. I knew what he liked. I knew how he wanted his bed done down. Everything done on timely manner and he would just have stories and you just sit there and hear him talk about his time in the war, different careers he had. He was just an amazing person. Unfortunately, he's passed away and he will be missed. He was an awesome person.
