Hi! My name is Diana. I live in Norwalk, CA. I have 10 years experience as a caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I went to school. And aside from that, as a Filipino, our tradition is to keep our family together, helping and caring, especially our elderly. And as a caregiver, it's vital role to play in the life of another person, which requires dedication, compassion, study and hard work. I think for someone who needs it, being needed, feeling accomplished, finding personal strength and increasing confidence, which is giving back to these people. Character building, developing new skills, learning to value this person, making a real difference, making someone smile. And making someone, they don't feel they're alone and there's someone to help them.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, putting away your needs to assist others. To have smile on your face can bring joy and happiness to someone else, is priceless. When you look back and reflect, and think how you have helped someone, is what caregiving is all about.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I'll never forget is Pedro. He had dementia, we always talk. And music is one of my favorites, so, I always sing, to try to connect with Pedro, singing songs in his generation, songs like in 70s and 60s, so we connected with music. And, I'm very happy because, the time that we do these things together, he would start talking about his good memories from the time he was really young. And that's probably his great memories. That's the client I will never forget, because with my music, we connect together. And I was able to make him happy, the memory of his happy childhood or happy teenager, the years to the extent where he could remember, all the old experience and happiness that he had in his life.
