Hi, my name is Diane. I live in Galveston, TX and I have 3 years of caregiver experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my mom. It's something personal to me. My mom requires care and I have been there for her my whole life. In addition to that, caregiving is something I just like doing. I just like to see people smile and make them feel loved and cared for so it's something I like doing personally and as a profession.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be patient with the client and always put themselves in their perspective. By that I mean, to be empathetic and look at each client you're caring for as a loved one. And just be patient and tolerant. You have to understand the client for who he or she and get to make the client feel comfortable with you. So I think that's my advice to a new caregiver.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Awa May. She is just like a very, very cool and happy lady. She's 97 years old and she still feels very young and she has a very special vibe. Whenever I go to care for her, she is like she cares about me a lot and gives me advice. That makes me feel at home, welcomed, and she sees me not like a staff but as one she can talk to as a companion. We're just there for each other and she's there for me.
