Hi! My name is Dolores. I live in Austin. I've been a caregiver for seven years.

How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because it is my passion to care for the senior and to care for the elderly. It is my passion to care for those who are in need of my help. They are fun. I enjoy doing it because I know I am patient. I am capable to do the caregiving tasks. I became a caregiver because I know it is my profession. I know each and everyone has his or her own profession or own ability to do certain things. So, I believe my own ability is to care for the senior, to care for the orphans, to care for those who are in need, the handicapped, those who are in need of my help. I know one day, I will also grow old and need somebody to care for me too. So I enjoy doing the caregiving job.

What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, you have to like this profession of caregiver. You have to enjoy the caregiving job. That is my first advice. If you enjoy doing it, then I will tell you it's a good profession for you. If you don't enjoy doing the caregiving tasks, I will tell you to drop because those who are in this profession, you must enjoy the caregiving tasks. If you don't enjoy it, then you won't be able to do the caregiving tasks because it entails sacrifices and patience. If you are not patient enough, don't be a caregiver. It's not a job for people to clown with because you are dealing here with somebody's life. The least mistake you do, you are rendering somebody's life into danger, so you must enjoy the caregiving tasks. You must have enough patience.

Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Mary. Mary was my client I work with. She suffered from stroke and Alzheimers. So in the process of caring for her, we were just like a family. So in the short time-- she was in hospice too. So the short time I cared for her, I really enjoyed caring for her. I really enjoyed everything I did for her, how we spent our time together. So I really enjoyed her. That is the client I will never forget.
