Hi! My name is Dominique. I live in Long Beach, CA. I've had one year experience as a caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my mom needed assistance at the time and she needed help as far as taking psych medicine. She was just in great hardship throughout her history. I took the responsibility of becoming my mom's caregiver for IHS. And it's been a whole year and it's been a great one. So I want to further my career field in caregiving and see what else is out there, what other opportunities are available.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to take life as it comes. Sometimes things can be a bit overwhelming and we have to take a step back and view ourself and view the situation and know that one day we're going to need the assistance. One day we're going to need someone to be patient, calm, welcoming, and in good spirits, and a good heart.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is my mom. On a daily basis, I made sure she ate well. She had a choice or a decision of what dessert she wanted, what entree, food. She loved my baking. She loved car rides. I'm quite a comedian and I like to make a lot of jokes. I tend to take life easy and not go harsh. And I tend to keep energy light, uplifting. I try to make sure that I throw a few jokes out there and just have her laughing for 30, 15 minutes at a time. It's all about just having good spirit, have good chi, good energy, good vibes. Keeping everybody at ease. Even during painful situations like hardships, family crisis, you've got to keep everything at ease and that's what I've learned.
