Hi, my name is Donata. I live in Cerritos, CA and I've been a caregiver for 16 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because back in the Philippines I took care of my grandmother for three years. I lived with her. And I used to be her primary caregiver since there's no other relative that can be close to her to give her daily needs like medication, cooking, bathing, and doctor's appointments. So far I know I'm a good caregiver.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice for new caregiver would be, you have to love your work. You have to be caring. And it's like transferring the way you take care of your body and doing it to your client. It's the love which is very important. The way you take care of your body and then transferring the care to the client. Because someday we will be old also. And we would want us to be taken care of the way we take care of our client.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Mr. Harry. He is a retired airforce guy who lost one of his eyes when a propeller hit his eyes during his duty in the military. And as he gets older, the other eye is deteriorating. So at 93, he cannot see anymore. But I was there to take care of him. And he really enjoyed the last three years of his life. His family members at the present are my friends and we keep in touch through Facebook. I cannot forget this family.
