Hi, my name is Dontesia. I live in Sacramento, CA and I have been a caregiver for five years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and dementia, and I helped my family with taking care of her. After she passed away, I was still interested in working with the elderly, the residents who have Alzheimer's and dementia. And eversince then, I've been a caregiver for five years. I feel like it's my passion and I love and enjoy doing it.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be always be loving, caring and understanding and to always, always cooperate with the clients' pace, and treat that resident with dignity and love like it's your own family member that you love and care for.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget, her name was Wendy. I met her maybe three years ago and from the time that I met her it's just always been love and happy and great conversation and we just had a connection from the start. Just hearing her tell her story about her past life and everything that she went through, and the heartache. You would never be able to tell that she went through any of that without her telling you. She always lived life happy. When I think about that resident, that client, it just brings happy and joy to me to know that I met someone and just how happy she was.
