Hi, my name is Doretha. I live in San Pablo, CA and I've been a caregiver for 17 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I love people and I love helping them. My mother was also a nurse and was a nurse all my life and I just kind of followed in her footsteps. She taught me to treat everyone as I will like to be treated. I love helping people, both young, old, male, female, it doesn't matter. I have something to offer and if someone can use it, then I gladly give it.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be please be kind, be patient and be on time for your job. The client is depending upon you. I would suggest to a new caregiver that if a client is of foul mind, then include them in all activities, ask questions, find out what the client likes and dislikes are and just be always kind and do your job efficiently.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I would never forget is Elsie. She was funny, very witty and talkative. She loved walking, loved to eat and loved getting in the kitchen.
