Hi, my name is Dwanette and I live in Richmond, TX and I have been a caregiver for 10 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I used to help individuals that had special need or disability, and it became something that I wanted to do as a career, and I continued to do it. I had enjoyed doing it and then also, it gave me the opportunity to work with family members that also needed assistance.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to always be patient and listen to what the person you're caring for has to say. Don't always assume that you know everything because they might tell you something that you don't know. Always have a good rapport with the person. Make that person comfortable to where they can be themselves around you.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Fay. She was very energetic even though she was bedridden and had to be cleaned and bathed and everything, but she was very energetic, always made me laugh. Had a lot of animals, and I'm the type of person who really don't like animals, but she loved animals, so the dislike I had for animals I pushed aside, just so I can be able to do my job, to make sure she was fine. She was married, and her husband was so excited just to have a caregiver that made them feel good.
