Hello, my name is Edward. I live in Citrus Heights, CA. And I've been a caregiver now for five years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I knew that people needed proper care. I've experienced improper care and it frustrated me to the point that I wanted to get into this field to help. I was also on my mother's hospice team, so caregiving and care providing has been a part of my life now for five years.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to make sure this was a field that they had passion for. Not only passion, but it takes compassion as well. So to just be patient with each client. Learn your client. Learn their idiosyncracies. Learn what they like and dislike. And perform the best that you can on each day. Stay positive and just remember that it is rewarding to be able to help someone.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget name is Barney. He was a mute and unable to speak, but once you got to learn him, he was able to speak in volumes. I never forget him. He had a passion for shoes and he was a great guy. Just everyday it was a thrill to work with him and to watch him grow older in grace.
