Hello, my name is Elvira. I live in Robstown, TX and I've had 20 years of experience as a home health aide.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because as a child, I am the oldest of 12. I helped my mother raise my brothers and sisters. I'm a single parent of four children. My first job was at state school working with individuals with handicapped, and I really love my job. I worked there for 13 years, and I worked at a psychiatric hospital, and I've also worked for companies.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, be very patient and cautious, and try to learn your patients, so you can get to know your patients. It's going to be time consuming, maybe, and maybe not, but just be careful and pay attention to what you're doing. All instructions are given to you, and you have a good day, and everything will be safe.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Sherry. She was so smart. She couldn't even talk or walk or anything, but she could speak with her eyes. She could point at a color and a number, and we had to look at a book and try to figure out what she was saying, and it was just amazing. This young lady wrote a book with the assistance of somebody that was helping her, it was an amazing book. It was called, "On The Inside Looking Out." That was just a memorable experience and I will never forget her, ever.
