Hi, my name is Emelda. I live in Spring Valley, CA. I have been a caregiver for five years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I like to assist clients who are disabled. I believe that I do have a lot of patience with them. I enjoy working with them and listening with their stories. I also like the fact that I administer their medication. And I love doing what I do.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be gentle with the patient. Know that they are very delicate and sensitive people. And also be detailed on what you do, make sure that they are being taken care of and hear what they have to say. Sometimes they have a lot of stories to tell you, and just listen to them and be gentle.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget her name is Shirley. My experience with her was actually a unique, because she was 87 years old. She was still able to walk, eat her meals, able to go to the bathroom. However, every three minutes she would ask me, "When do I get to go home, and, who is going to pick me up?".
