Hi, my name is Emily and I live in Nipomo, CA. and I've been a caregiver for 2 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver after watching my grandma go through dementia and I just love helping people. I've gained so much experience in the past two years in the healthcare industry. I'm just really excited to learn more and gain more experience.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be just to treat the job as not a job, but to treat the people like they were your family and how you'd want your family to be treated. I believe some people just get in the habit of treating it like a job and not treating the patients like they're humans and so they really deserve all the respect that you would want.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Cathleen when I worked in a nursing facility. She was a bit rough around the edges and a lot of CNAs and caregivers tended to shy away from going in her room to help her. As I became to get to know her, I learned that if you just talk to them and find stuff you have in common, they become just very sweet and are willing to open up when you just treat them with respect that you think you deserve and you treat them the way you want to be treated. We became really good friends. We had a lot in common and talked about-- she loved basketball. She used to be a police officer in LA, so I heard so many stories. I just got to really know who she was as a person
