Can you tell me a little about yourself and how you got into caregiving?
Hi. My name is Emma. I live in Union City, California, and I've been a caregiver since 2008 and I'm also a CNA since 1995. I worked in Masonic Home of California, Union City, as a CNA and med-tech in assisted living. The people who inspired me to be a caregiver are my parentsand my cousins.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client that I can't forget is Reuben. And until now, I still visit Reuben in a care home in San Leandro. What I did with Reuben was to provide his care for his showering, dressing, meals and to cook his food, especially breakfast, and to give him exercise, walk him with a walker, shave, and -- everything.
What piece of advice would you give to a new caregiver?
What is your proudest moment as a caregiver?
One piece of advice to be a good caregiver is to be good at communication, speak softly to the client, to have eye contact, eye level with the client so that the client is able to understand you.
What makes me proud as a caregiver is getting Reuben -- he weighs 200 pounds and I weigh 105. His wife doesn't believe me that I can do it, but I did. I transferred Reuben very safely to a chair, to the commode, to the shower, and walked with him and his walker.
