Hi, my name is Erica. I live in Oceanside, CA. I've been a caregiver for five years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I love people, and I love caring for people. I helped take care of my grandmother for many years. I've alyways had a desire to help the elderly. I have started five years ago, I've continued and love it. I want to be a nurse eventually.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be breath, be patient, and remember that the people you're caring for, it could be you, or a loved one someday. Patience and listening go a long way. Just treat people how you would want your mom, or your friend, or your cousin, or yourself to be treated someday.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is a client I had at a care-home I worked at in Arizona. This client had severe dementia, and rarely remember day to day thing, but the stories she would talk, would take you back to a time, to a time where she was happy, and it was so nice to be able to sit and hear these stories, share moment with her, because alot of times she was scared or lost, she did not know what was going on but the most moment she could relive a happy time, which is very fortunate. And to be able to experience that with her, so rewarding. I will never forget her.
