Hi, my name is Esther. I live in Stockton, CA and I have three years experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because of my mom. And I went to all the classes and learned what I would do for her or what is required. I did it for three years. And the way I got the information was probably through a friend of mine-- told me that she was doing caregiver work. So I inquired and did the classes and started helping my mom do things that she was unable to do.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to be passionate, to be helpful, to provide a lot of attention, and caring. And show them that you're not there just for the check, that you have a passion for taking care of people. Don't step on their toes as far as the way they like things. Maybe you could convince them to change it and show them that it might work this way. Don't ever try to take over their lives because they are set in their ways.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
The client I will never forget, of course, is my mother. She was just always so happy to see me, and go grocery shopping with her, and have the patience that she needed to go grocery shopping, and other outings because after a while she could not drive anymore. So it was kind of like you have to make that-- part of your lifestyle is to take care of the elderly and the elder one that you are caring for.
