Hi, my name is Ethel. I live in Upland, CA and I've been a caregiver for five years.

How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I was a stay-at-home mom and I wanted the flexibility to be able to still be with my children and also to be able to have the care for someone else. So I became a caregiver for that reason. And then when my daughter was diagnosed with type one diabetes, my mom with cancer, I thought of the importance of being able to have people in your life that can be patient and kind.

What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to be patient, learn the person that you're taking care of, to study them, and to really treat them like you would want someone to treat your own mother or father.

Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Maxine. She was 101 and she is feisty, she still had her wits with her, and she was funny, and I just will never forget her because she cared for others. She still remembers when we would go away and come back and ask about what was going on in our lives. I'll never forget her.
