Hi my name is Evelyn, I live in Santa Monica, CA and I've been a caregiver for three years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I watched my mother as she declined, as she got older, also her friends and also my two friends, one mother with dementia and the other one with Alzheimers and just watching seniors in general, crossing the street with no help, it just hurt my heart so I decided to do something to help.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to any new caregiver would be to make sure you listen to the person you're giving care to, that's very important. Also, if the person has dementia or Alzheimers, that you have patience.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Anj because she was so jovial and so intellectual and always cared about me, making sure I eat, had water, always wanted me to sit down and talk with her or go for a walk with her, she reminded me of my mother. On my last day, we had the best time I've ever had with a client at my job. We laughed and talked about tea and crumpets and saying, "Simply marvelous," and "Fabulous," and saying it over and over. It was the best time I've ever had as a caregiver.
