Hi, my name is, Eya. I live in San Diego, CA and I have been a caregiver for 8 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I love helping people, and I love making difference in different lives. Also, I became a caregiver because my own mother lives in West Africa, Togo. Someone is taking care of her. So I became a caregiver to give someone the same care that I want, as a daughter and as a person, to give to my own mother. With love, and compassion, and dignity. I love doing that because it's helping someone and making a difference in their life.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to be patient and not take any issue that can make the client or patient become upset with you, not to take things personally because it's not personal. And always, always ask for question and advice from your supervisor if you are unsure of something because it's better you ask and get clarification than to just be guessing because you're dealing with a human being. You're dealing with somebody's mother or father,
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Miss Miriam. I used to take care of her. She was very sick, but at the same time, she loves her husband amidst her illness. And we had some difficult time, but we laughed through it, we had fun, and we made it through the day. It was very positive. And now she's living on her own, and she's doing really good. So for me, it's really rewarding knowing that I contributed to someone getting better and doing good on their own. And the family's really happy.
