Hi, my name is Flor. I am a caregiver for seven years, and I live in Rosemead, CA.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I love to help the older. I like to give companionship. I also am trying to help the disabled people, especially patients suffering stroke, dementia, Alzheimer's. And I like to do the medical appointment with them. I am a companion to shopping and I like to make their housekeeping, like cook, clean the house, clean the clothes.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, be a good listener, a good companion. You need to be kind to your patient, especially with the elderly patient, the disabled patient. They need more companionship. You need to watch their behaviors and you have to ask always if they need something. Be a good listener and look at all of the behaviors.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Maria. She was in the hospital and I was a caregiver for her, and I took care of her on the day she had a seizure. Right away I call into the RN and they asked what happened to her - if she was disillusioned and in the stage of dementia. Then she was shaking. Her body was shaking. And I call into RN and explained everything then, and they gave me the procedures, and they saved her life. When Maria woke up, she called me to say thank you for everything because I saved her life.
