Hi, my name is Florence. I live in Chatsworth, CA and I've been a caregiver for over 16 years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I saw the world's need and I feel like taking care of people and loving them and helping them live a normal life, even in their old age or in their medical condition, I mean, it's like a calling. It's a good feeling, anyway.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, number one, treat others as you would love to be treated. Do unto others as you would love them do unto you. Number two is, treat your client or your patients with respect. It doesn't matter the situation. It doesn't matter their handicap or very sick or the hospital life. They just have the respect as human beings. My first advice, if only we could love one person, take care of them.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Aileen and her birthday is a few days, two days after my young sister's birthday and she was a sweet sweetheart. She was a sweetheart and her grandkids would come to visit her, her children would come to visit her. I spent so much time with her. I remember I was pregnant and she would tell me, "Oh, Florence, did you get something good to eat? You should drink a glass of milk. It will make your baby strong. Your baby will have strong bones and teeth."
