Hello, my name is Francis, I live in Houston, TX, and I've been a caregiver for 30 plus years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because my mother always did private duty nursing and she would take me along as a young kid sometimes and I just really was very interested and she implores me for how much she took care in the knowledge of personal care for anyone that needed help. I love to help people and I have a desire to continue to do the work as a helper and assist in any illness that I am aware of and can learn and for future growth.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver is to monitor your patient closely, always double check medications that you are helping with or preparing, keep your patient clean and always check skin care and body care. Just show that you are interested in the patient, always keep eye contact with your patient and be very personal about each and every patient and their care, and also the families around them to show that you are a person of kindness and that you are there to be when they are not there, or just to assist.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Rib, very kind elderly person who cared about everyone he met, he was very interested in teaching you, also, while you were assisting him. He loved to read and I guess because I also love to read, we enjoyed each others company, we enjoyed history stories, a lot of times, we would sit and talk about the past and history and old times when he worked. I just loved to listen and I guess that's the most important thing for me with that client, with Rib, I just enjoyed his conversation.
