Hi, my name is Freddy. I live in Concord, CA and I've been a caregiver for five years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because about five and a half years ago my mother had an injury to her leg and I was forced to get off work and help her out around the house. After about six months of helping her heal and recover, she recommended me to a friend of hers who had actually gone through something similar. From there on, I started my career as a caregiver, and from there on I only worked with private clients and usually for shorter periods of time.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, to be patient and seriously take the time to understand the patient's need and the person that you're taking care of, and remembering that they are human and always keeping that human touch with them, and not being afraid to ask for help if needed.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Simon. I remember he used to be very outgoing and very adventurous, and it was hard with his mobility, but we still worked hard together to make sure he can do everything he wanted even with his limitations. The hardest part of my job, making sure I can give him everything he wants even though he was unable to move as much as he would like to.
