Hi, my name is Gayle. I live in The Woodlands, TX. And I have 13 years experience as a companionship sitter and caregiver.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver in 2004 when I accidentally ran into Home Instead, a national senior care service and they asked me to be their weekend supervisor, supervising the caregivers, as well as checking on their clients. And that's when I became interested. Since then I've had my own personal very, very long term clients, such as two years, two and a half year, eight months and so forth.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, be sure that you are completely thorough in any position that you're working in. Extremely competent with details, always on time. Try to be more, do a little bit more than the actual duties, and follow through. And, of course, with that, compassion with whomever you're working for.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client that I will never forget is a gentleman in his early 90s. I was with him part-time for two and a half years. We became more best friends and best friends with the family until he was deceased two and a half years after I met him. He had a lot of humor, a lot of activities that I participated in with him. And always was such a lovely, charming person. Of course, I could never forget him.
