Hi, my name is Grayson. I live in Mesquite, TX. And I've been a caregiver for one year.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I have a lot of family that's in the medical field. My mother, she's an LVN, and my grandmother was an RN. Now she's a retired RN, and my mother's going to school right now to become an RN. So, I've been knowing a few things about the medical field since I've been growing up. So right now, I want to continue being a caregiver as I go to school to be an OTA. That's an occupational therapist's assistant.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be, you have to care for whoever you're caring for as if that is one of your loved one. You have to be proactive. You also have to be quick on your feet. You have to be clean as well. It's something like customer service, but it's more than that. So, you have to just be quick on your feet. And just show love and show that you care.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is David. He had a heart transplant. I remember when he couldn't walk as well. He couldn't really use the bathroom. He couldn't really do as much. But as we left the rehabilitation center and went to his home again, I started working him out more. And I started seeing progress. We started walking around the house more. At first, it was hard, and then I can see, he was picking it up. He was kind of aggressive at times, but then he understood that I was trying to help him.
