Hi. My name is Guadalupe, I live in Carson, CA, and I have 9 years of experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I used to work at many hospitals as a certified nursing assistant, and it required a companion caregiver for all kind of patients with mental illness. And not only that, I cared for my dad. For a year, he had a very bad lung disease, so I took care of him. So that's what made me become a caregiver, ever since my dad passed a year ago.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be alert at all times with the patient for any changes in breathing. Encourage patients to drink a lot of fluids, eat, and stay by their bedside as much as you can and just observe the patient. Let them express their feeling, talking. As a new caregiver, I would give advice just like that.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
He was in last stage of cancer, so he asked me to hold his hand and just pray for him, and then he wanted me to stay by his side until he passed away. And I felt really good about me staying next to his side before he passed away. So that made me feel really good, because he was really scared, and I feel that I made him comfortable by not leaving the room at any time. And that's what made me happy, that he stood by me-- he had no family members to visit him. So that made me really feel good inside, that i stayed next to that patient for as long as I was able to because he had cancer, but then he passed away.
