Hi! My name is Heather. I live in Los Angeles, CA and I have been a caregiver for the last five years.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because it's something that I got to do when I was growing up in high school. I got to take care of my grandmother. And then I learned throughout the years that I really liked taking care of other people. So whenever a family member or a friend was sick, for instance, my girlfriend who just passed, who had brain cancer. I was caregiving for her for the last year.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to have patience, be professional but also do this job with your heart. It's important to want to help other people, to have a natural ability to care for other people. Time management is very important. And being a people person really helps, too.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is my grandmother. She was the first woman that I was able to take care of. But really a lesson that I learned only through caregiving, I became closer with my grandma. I was able to spend the last couple years of her life by her side, got to know her in ways I never thought I would. I learned so much about her. I had so much admiration for my grandmother. She is definitely one woman I will never forget.
