Hi, my name is Heather. I live in McKinney, TX and I have two years of experience.
How did you get into caregiving?
I became a caregiver because I started taking care of my neighbor's husband when she couldn't and my grandfather, who had a stroke. And now my grandmother has Alzheimer's. So that inspired me because I know I'm a big help to them and I want to share that with all the other elderly people who are in need.
What advice would you provide to a new caregiver?
My advice to a new caregiver would be to be patient, understanding, to not lose your temper because they're only human and they are going through a difficult time in their life and they don't need someone to frustrate them or get angry with them because of a condition that they cannot help.
Who is one of your most memorable clients?
A client I will never forget is Al. He was my next door neighbor. He was so sweet and so caring and funny. And he always had some story to tell. And I would always go over and shovel his yard and he would be snow blowing and he would always manage to hit me with snow from the snow blower. And I never knew how he did it, but he would always do it somehow. And I would just get covered in snow and he would laugh so hard. And that laughter was just the best sound in the world, to know that I was helping someone in need and being his friend at the same time. And I could never forget that.
